In 2011 the Universidad del Valle de Atemajac (UNIVA) campus of Puerto Vallarta, with the support of Rotary both at the local Club level and with the assistance from visiting Rotarians, developed an orchestra and choral program open to the community. The program is geared towards teaching children and teens with an interest in music.

The goals and benefits of this program are to have a special venue for the development of music and culture in the region and also it is hoped that through involving children and teens in a music program, they will be diverted from participating in antisocial activities.

The program began with donated used instruments and initially there were more students than instruments, so instruments had to be shared. Through the generous donation of funds from the Rotary Club of Calgary Heritage Park, many more instruments were purchased. There are still instruments needed of all types in order to grow the program and bring the joy of music to more members of the community.

The UNIVA Orchestra performs in the Puerto Vallarta area and has been featured in concert at the Malecon stage.
